The Baark! team arrived In Mangrove Cay, Andros on April 11th for set up and carried out surgeries for 4 days— April 12th-15th-returning to Nassau on April 16. We collected cats and dogs from all the settlements of Mangrove Cay; from Little Harbour in the north to as far south as Lisbon Creek where our clinic was set up. Many animals required trapping and/ or collection and transport to our clinic. With the help of one awesome local volunteer, Henry Bannister, we were able to locate many animals and sterilise 115 in total-80 dogs and 35 cats.
Without consistent veterinary care available, many animals were in great need of flea and tick medication which all our patients received. In addition, every dog or cat that was spayed or neutered was vaccinated. We spoke with residents about the importance of spay and neuter and distributed educational colouring books to children on the island.
After assisting us at our South Andros Clinic last month, volunteers Rose Windsor and Mia Sheppard came to Mangrove Cay to help the Baark! for a couple of days. We were very grateful and happy to have them back on the team. The local government and community in general were very helpful and hospitable, making sure we ate great meals and had the supplies we needed for clinic. We were even able to borrow a truck from the Department of Environmental Health Services for a day to help us transport even more animals.
During our time in Mangrove Cay we were able to find homes for 3 puppies that needed our help – they went to wonderful families who were very excited to have them. We look forward to a return visit to Mangrove Cay next year so that we may continue to reduce the suffering of animals through spay and neuter and make a positive contribution to the community.
